A Simple Guide to Your Colonoscopy
A Simple Guide to Your Colonoscopy
A colonoscopy is a common procedure used to examine the inside of the colon and rectum. At our Beverly Hills GI practice, our team guides you through every stage of the process, from preparation and check-in to recovery and results.

STEP 01
Preparing for Your Colonoscopy
Proper preparation helps your gastroenterologist clearly see the lining of your colon. Before your colonoscopy, you will receive detailed instructions about your diet, medications, and bowel preparation.
- Follow the recommended diet before your procedure.
- Take the prescribed bowel preparation as directed.
- Follow your doctor’s medication instructions.
- Arrange for someone to drive you home.
STEP 02
Arriving for Your Procedure
When you arrive, our team will help you complete the check-in process and prepare you for your procedure. Your medical team will review your medical history, medications, and any questions you may have.
You will change into a medical gown and have your vital signs monitored before the procedure begins.

STEP 03
During the Colonoscopy
During the procedure, your gastroenterologist uses a colonoscope, a thin flexible instrument with a camera, to examine the lining of the colon and rectum.
The colonoscope allows your doctor to look for abnormalities such as polyps, inflammation, bleeding, and other changes in the colon.
- Examination of the colon and rectum
- Identification of abnormal tissue
- Removal of polyps when appropriate
- Biopsy of tissue when needed
STEP 04
Your Comfort During the Procedure
Many patients have concerns about discomfort during a colonoscopy. Medication is typically provided to help you remain comfortable and relaxed during the procedure.
Your care team will monitor you throughout the procedure and recovery period to help ensure your safety and comfort.

STEP 05
Recovery After Your Colonoscopy
After the procedure, you will spend some time in a recovery area while the effects of the medication wear off.
You may feel bloated or experience mild cramping afterward. These symptoms are generally temporary.
Because medications used during the procedure can affect your alertness, arrange for someone to take you home and follow your doctor’s instructions about returning to normal activities.
STEP 06
Understanding Your Results
Your gastroenterologist will discuss the findings of your colonoscopy with you and explain any recommended next steps.
If tissue was removed or biopsied, the sample may be sent to a laboratory for additional evaluation. Your doctor will explain when and how you can expect to receive those results.
